Step – Parent Rights – Texas

My state is Texas. I have been the step-father of my daughter since she was 6 months old. She is now 4. Her mother and I have been married for 2 years now. The father has been court ordered to pay child support and has failed to do so for the past 4 months, and is behind around $3800. He has not seen her since she was 2. My question is how much rights would I have to her if (heaven forbid) something happened to her mother. The last thing I would want is for her to be taken away from me as well. Should we pursue termination and adoption to keep something like this from happening, or would I still have rights as a step-parent?

I would find a good family attorney near your neck of the woods in Texas. I do know that sometimes, when you adopt your step child, the child support ends.
