There is a federal law against medical marijuana. California passed a state law that allows it. Right now there is legal limbo. The feds can raid, confiscate, and arrest people in California. Local authorities cannot. This will probably go to the Supreme Court because of the legal inconsistency.
I think in California its legal but not in all states. Here is a good site to look at to find information on the legalization of marijuana.
