My brother lives in Long Island, NY and was recently put in jail for a crime. He has been charged with a felony and I would like to know information regarding felonies. How much time is he facing if he is convicted for the crime? Do you think he should hire a criminal lawyer or can he fight this charge by himself? Is a felony worse than a misdemeanor? He told me he was innocent of the crime and he doesn’t think he will be convicted. If this is the case why was he arrested in the first place? I don’t really know anything about criminal law so if someone could answer and explain this to me I would appreciate it.

A felony regardless if he lives or the crime was committed in Long Island holds a minimum of two years in jail. If I were your brother I would seriously considering hiring a criminal lawyer to take the case. By no means should he even consider representing himself in court. A misdemeanor is less of a charge which means in criminal terms it is much better to be charged with a misdemeanor than it is a felony. If he is innocent of the crime and his lawyer can prove it, than he will be a free man. Chances are though, your brother is probably guilty. He was ultimately arrested and charged because the arresting officers believed he was guilty of committing a crime. Tell your brother to hire a criminal lawyer in the same county he was arrested. There are two counties Suffolk County and Nassau County. Contact a lawyer in the county in which he was booked.
