Leaking Air Conditioner with resulting mold problem

Posted on : 07-07-2009 | By : Legal Information | In : Other Legal Topics

Recently we discovered that our air conditioner was leaking into our basement closet where all of our winter clothing and shoes are stored. The closet is newly carpeted and when I went in discovered that it was totally soaked. We pulled everything out and pulled the carpet up to discover about a 1/2 inch of mold growing. We informed our land lord of the problem on Friday the 3rd of july and he told us he would be out of town until Monday to take a look at it. We really couldn’t wait that long the smell was becoming horrendous so we rented a steam cleaner to try and take care of the situation. The landlord then informed us that it was our problem to take care of the carpets and he wasn’t going to do anything about it. We are wondering what we should do because the smell is becoming overpowering again and we are worried about health issues that could result. Please help us. Oh, this is also the 3rd time our basement has had water damage and no effort has been made to sanitize the carpets the first 2 times were sewage line back ups.
