I lived in a rental property for over 4 1/2 years that was contaminated with lead paint. My husband and I worked to keep chips covered and minimized our children’s exposure to the dust with frequent cleaning, hand washing, etc. The owner of the home renovated part of the house and did not follow any of the safety procedures related to renovations in a home containing lead. She did not inform us of the lead levels found in the home or the possible dangers such a renovation could pose to us and our two small children. My son’s lead levels subsequently rose, my daughter’s remained roughly the same. We have since moved from the home but I am curious to know if there is a statute of limitations on reporting this sort of violation and if there are any steps I should be taking to hold the landlord responsible for my children’s health, nevermind for her negligent behavior. I believe she should have disclosed specific information about the lead content in the home upon renting it and she should have taken the proper steps during the renovation, knowing more lead was disturbed during the process.
