How do I go about finding a lawyer for a custody case when I don’t have any money. I have contacted several child custody lawyers in Boulder, Colorado and all of them want money up front and money on the back-end. Some want full payment. The problem I am having is its tough being a single mother on a small income and I just don’t have money to pay a lawyer right now. Can someone please assist me?

To add on what Joey is saying, first contact a legal aid service. I have attached link http://coloradolegalservices.org. This site is set-up to work with people that have a low income. You should be able to find some pretty useful information on this site and I would contact them asap. As for the payment schedule he is right. I would look on several websites and find out those attorneys willing to take a payment plan. Most of these attorneys will and it is also on their website. If you happen to get denied by legal aid than this would obviously be your best alternative.

You have about 2 different options. First, most lawyers do not work for free so if you think that you are going to find a lawyer to take your case out of the goodness of their heart, you are sadly mistaken. What you need to due is contact a legal aid. A legal aid is set-up just for these types of cases. They will assist you and assign you representation for you custody case. The second option is call around to these types of lawyers and find out if they will set-up some sort of payment plan for you. Most family lawyer will work out payment plans. Trust me you are not the only woman out there that has this very issue. These types of lawyers typically will set up some sort of payment schedule so that you don’t get the big hit up front. Sometimes legal aid will deny you and this would be your only other option.
