It also could depend upon the crime. For instance, your costs to hire a criminal lawyer for a felony may be more expensive than hiring one for a misdemeanor. What type of crime have you committed? If its a typical DUI / DWI than the fee will be more standard. However, if you are being charged for murder than of course you fees are going to be much more steep. For cases that are more involved the hourly rate may increase and the hours that an attorney spends providing legal services for your crime will also increase. Also consider the following: a criminal lawyer in Baltimore may provide higher fees than that of a lawyer outside of Baltimore City. In other words sometimes the location of the lawyer could potentially play a part on their costs.
As the person that responded above the other factor certainly is experience. If a criminal lawyer has been practicing law for 30 years and defending criminal cases than the fees for that attorney will probably cost more than someone that is new to the field or has been practicing criminal law for a short period of time.
I hope this helps!
Thank you for your responses! I am being charged with a DUI. I was caught drinking and driving and I didn’t take a Breathalyzer. This is my first DUI charge so I’m assuming it will be a misdemenor. I have never been in trouble before and this is my first criminal charge. I am looking for a Baltimore criminal lawyer because the DUI took place in Baltimore. Do I have to hire a Baltimore DUI lawyer or can I hire someone in my town. I really don’t feel like traveling all the way down there if I don’t have too.
Please advise!
You don’t have to hire a DUI attorney in Baltimore but certainly one that practices criminal law in Maryland. If you are coming from out of state you typically have to hire one in the state that you got the DUI unless you know an attorney that holds a license to practice criminal law in Maryland and the other state.
I would look to someone that practices DWI defense that is at least close to Baltimore. He or she will know the judicial landscape (know the judges from experience). DWI tends to be a flat rate. The last I heard was like $1,500-$10,000 (top of the line attorney usually 2nd or 3rd violation). You will have to have 2 hearings. The first one is at the Maryland Department of Motor Vehicles to rule on your license status. The second will be in a criminal court, which will rule on your criminal charges (jail time, fine, probation etc…)
I was pulled over in Baltimore last year for a DUI. My lawyer charged me $3000.00 to take my case. I just received a second DUI and the same lawyer is now trying to charge me $5,000. I think the price also has to do with how many DUI’s you’ve received in the past. I’m assuming a 3rd DUI would be the $10,000 range.
I’m not too sure that any DUI lawyer in Baltimore is worth 5 G’s! Hell, I’m not sure any DUI lawyer anywhere is worth that much!
I was stopped for speeding and assested for DUI, but did not receive my copy of the DUI citation. What do I do?
There is going to be quite a range of factors on the cost of a criminal defense attorney in Baltimore, MD. Some lawyers charge by the hour, and that rate can vary by experience and reputation. Othertimes criminal lawyers will charge a set fee for certain charges such as Drunk Driving.
