My wife and I have 2 small children and are thinking of getting an au pair to look after them as both of us work. Daycare is just not personal enough for us. We don’t want to get someone to watch the kids that comes to the country illegally. What type of visa would a potential au pair need to enter the US and work for a family like us? The immigration laws in the United States seem so complex. Thanks!

There are many legal issues related to au pair childcare. I think it would be better if you consult an au pair agency at your place. They will look after these immigration issues and it is also advantageous as this will ensure your child safety as well.

Your au pair will need a J-1 cultural exchange visa. We host an au pair with Cultural Care Au Pair (www.culturalcare.com) and they take care of all the screening and paperwork that the Department of State requires.

Your Au Pair would need to get a J-1 visa which covers Exchange type visitors to the US. Other categories in this visa would be professors and foreign grad students.
